The Book that Sparked a Spiritual Revolution !

Paramhansa Yogananda was the first yoga master of India whose mission was to live and teach in the West. In the 1920s, enthusiastic audiences filled the largest halls in America to hear him speak. His initial impact was truly impressive. But his lasting influence is greater still. This book, first published in 1946, helped launch, and continues to inspire, a spiritual revolution in the West.

Only rarely does a sage of Paramhansa Yogananda's stature write a firsthand account of his life experiences. Followers of many religious traditions have come to recognize Autobiography of a Yogi as a masterpiece of spiritual literature. Yet, for all its depth, it is full of gentle humor, lively stories, and practical common sense. This is a verbatim reprinting of the original edition, now also including previously unreleased bonus materials. This is the only available edition that contains:

  • The original, unedited text, as written by Yogananda himself, free from posthumous changes introduced by others.
  • An appendix containing the final chapter, written five years after this edition was first published, presented free from all changes made after Yogananda’s death.
  • An all-new foreword and afterword, written by Swami Kriyananda, one of Yogananda’s best-known direct disciples.

This is a verbatim reprinting of the original 1946 edition. Although subsequent reprintings, reflecting revisions made after the author's death in 1952, have sold over a million copies and have been translated into more than 19 languages, the few thousand of the original have long since disappeared into the hands of collectors. Now, with this reprint, the 1946 edition is again available, with all its inherent power, just as the great master of yoga first presented it.

A book about masters of yoga and saints, written by someone who was himself a master of yoga and a saint. This is an unusual and unique book.

Autobiography of a Yogi talks about miracles, meditation and yogic teachings in  a way that is easy to understand and even entertaining. For someone interested in spirituality, or even just alternate ways of looking at life, it's incredibly illuminating.

The world is a different place than it would have been without this book. The New Age movement in the West, the impact the book has had on leaders in many fields, and the rise in the practice of yoga and meditation are due in large part to Yogananda’s influence and the influence of his autobiography.

Philip Goldberg wrote in American Veda that “Among the people I interviewed about their key spiritual influences, a high percentage named a book, and by far the book most often mentioned was Yogananda's unique memoir. A distant second was Be Here Now by Ram Dass, and he mentioned the Autobiography.”

Sometimes people read it and have their life turned around entirely. It’s a book that, like other scripture, inspires life-long devotion.

Anyone who is interested should read it. It is a great book in every sense of the word.

What Others Are Saying

"In the original edition, published during Yogananda's life, one is more in contact with Yogananda himself. While Yogananda founded centers and organizations, his concern was more with guiding individuals to direct communion with Divinity rather than with promoting any one church as opposed to another. This spirit is easier to grasp in the original edition of this great spiritual and yogic classic."

David Frawley, Director, American Institute of Vedic Studies

"Autobiography of a Yogi is the story of a young Bengali Indian’s intense search for God. It describes a number of living saints he met on his journey, especially his own great guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar. It also describes, more clearly than any other mystical work I have ever read since, the author’s experiences with God, including the highest one possible, samadhi: mystical union. In chapter after chapter I found moving testimony to God’s living reality, not only in infinity, but in the hearts and lives of living human beings. I read of how Yogananda’s prayers, even for little things, had been answered, and of how, by placing himself unreservedly in God’s hands, his unanticipated needs had been met unfailingly. I read of intense love for God such as I myself yearned to possess; of a relationship with Him more intimate, more dear than I had dared to imagine possible . . .

"Autobiography of a Yogi remains the greatest book I have ever read. One perusal of it was enough to change my whole life."

Swami Kriyananda, Founder of Ananda Sangha, spiritual teacher, composer, author of more than 90 books, including The New Path: My Life with Paramhansa Yogananda

"This renewed contact with the Yogisphere, its mental superiority to material reality, and its spiritual discipline, was very instructive for me, and I am grateful to you for granting me some insight into this fascinating world."

Thomas Mann, Nobel Prize winner

"Amazing, true stories of saints and masters of India, blended with priceless superphysical information—much needed to balance the Western material efficiency with Eastern spiritual efficiency—come from the vigorous pen of Paramhansa Yogananda, whose teachings my husband and myself have had the pleasure of studying for twenty years."

Amelita Galli-Curci, opera singer and direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda

"An unbelievable and magnificent spiritual adventure that is simply wrought with unparalleled divine love, wisdom, and inspiration. Yogananda tells each and every one of us that if we search diligently within for that 'pearl of great price,' we too will find the divine aspect of our being—that consciousness which is already there, waiting for us to awaken to its presence."

John Laurence, minister and direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda

"'Five Stars' would be a poor symbol to represent Yogananda's opus. This is a great book—comparable to any of the world's scriptures in its ability to transform the reader's consciousness. Imagine Christ, Buddha, or Krishna telling their life story in their own words. That's what you get when you read Autobiography of a Yogi. With humor, wisdom, and heart, Yogananda relates the extraordinary events of his life. And yet, on a deeper level, those events serve as mere instruments for conveying sublime truths—truths expressed in such clear language that everyone can grasp them. I thank Crystal Clarity Publishers for making available the original version of this great work, and I give it my highest recommendation. If you are interested in spirituality, buy it now."

Richard Salva, author of The Reincarnation of Abraham Lincoln and Walking with William of Normandy: A Paramhansa Yogananda Pilgrimage Guide

Looks great by my bed!
Even my boyfriend keeps commenting how much he likes it. It's a usable piece of art! I will comment that the earring holes can be a little tricky since the leaves are turned all different ways. You have to be strategic with how you line up your long/dangle-y earrings with your studs so everybody fits and can be seen. A little tricky. But not a deal breaker - especially when it's so easy on the eye. The other slight negative is that this really isn't the best necklace holder. I would have thought, "No problem!" But it's a bit awkward. Especially if you actually intend to see all your earrings. You'll end up hanging most of your necklaces from the top most branch - but they slide down into the crevice to stay. Then you've got a lot of overlapping. And trickiness to retrieve the exact necklace you want with ease. However, this is still a fabulous earring tree. I can't say enough good things about it. Love the little basket for miscellaneous. Hair bands, lip gloss, etc.

Beautiful jewelry display
Color: Bronze-Tone
A few rough edges, but all in all well made and attractive. Holds lots of earrings and I can drape my necklaces on the tree. There's a nice bowl for bracelets and a nice tray that forms the base.

Gorgeous
Color: Bronze-Tone
It really is pretty to look at. To be honest arranging the earring on the tree is a bit of a pain, because the leaves tilt in different directions, and you have to play with it a bit to get the earrings to hang the way you would like them, but once you figure it out, they look very nice. I just adore it because it looks so pretty. I use the basket on the side for rings and watches, and the little plate in the base for a few miscellaneous pieces like necklaces or bracelets for balance and because they look nice. You'll love it.

gorgeous, and worth the purchase.
Color: Bronze
I wasn't sure about purchasing the jewelry stand at first (I had my doubts), but those doubts quickly disappeared upon the arrival/unpackaging of the jewelry stand. SHIPPING/PACKAGING It was nicely packaged, and not bent or damaged when I recieved it. The stand was a little wobbly (due to careless measuring of the copper balls, the fault of the manufacturer) THE PRODUCT The pictures are not how it is. Remember that. I thought the tree would be more three dimensional, you know- like a real tree. It wasn't, though. It was like someone took a 2D copper tree and made it stand up. It's still pretty, though, and holds a lot of jewelry. PRICE-WISE If you're looking at the price and it says $45 or more, don't buy it. I waited a month for the price to go down (I'm just a cheapskate) and it did. It went from $45 or so, down to $25 or so. So, unless its life or death, be patient and buy it when the price is right. OVERALL? In general, I was pleased with the product. It wasn't my dream jewelry stand, but it was worth my money and the wait.

Beautiful and sturdy
Color: Bronze, Color: Bronze
This piece is far superior than I expected. It is beautiful and sturdy. I don't have a lot of fancy jewelry. I just have several everyday pieces with a few unique pieces. This tree was perfect. It is attractive, like a unique piece of jewelry itself.
