Choro or chorinho is a popular Brazilian music genre originating in 19th century Rio.Consideredthe first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music it is the equivalent of styles like ragtime in the United States, tango in Argentina and habanera in Cuba which emerged around the same time as well.Despite its name (which translates to ‘lament’) the music is usually fast, with a happy rhythm, characterised by virtuosity, improvisation and subtle modulations, full of syncopation and counterpoint.
