Proof of Guilt: Barbara Graham and the Politics of Executing Women in AmericaBarbara Graham might have been a diabolical dame in a hard boiled detective story beautiful, sexy, and deadly. Barbara Graham might have been a diabolical dame in a hard-boiled detective story--beautiful, sexy, and deadly. Charged alongside two male friends in the murder of an elderly widow during a botched robbery attempt, "Bloody Babs" became the third woman executed in California--after a 1953 trial that played out before standing-room-only crowds captured the imaginations of journalists, filmmakers, and death penalty opponents. Why, Kathleen A. Cairns asks, of all the capital cases in the twentieth century, did Graham's have such political resonance and staying power?

Leaving aside the question of guilt or innocence--debated to this day--Cairns examines how Graham's case became a touchstone in the ongoing debate over capital punishment. While prosecutors positioned the accused woman as a femme fatale, the media came to offer a counternarrative for Graham's life highlighting her abusive and lonely beginnings. Cairns shows how Graham's case became crucial to the abolitionists of the time, who used instances of questionable guilt to raise awareness of the arbitrary and capricious nature of death penalty prosecutions. Critical in keeping capital punishment in the forefront of public consciousness until abolitionists homed in on a winning strategy, Graham's case illustrates the power of individual stories to shape wider perceptions and ultimately public policies.

Amazing!
Format: Board book
I love this book. It's a great book for children with speech issues to use to practice, and it is terrific for early literacy. The story is super cute, and the pictures are awesome. Literally, the only thing that could be improved is if the faces of the parents were shown in all the pages. I don't understand why they are cut off on several pages. Otherwise, I highly recommend!

Definitely toddler and younger
Format: Kindle
This books is cute and has a ton of repetition. It’s very simple and sweet - but it says baby-3 years of age and I think 2.5 and under is the highest age I’d go. My three year old got bored after two readings, so we’re going to give it to her little cousin. Love that it’s a board book so it will stand up to tiny hands!

Adorable and useful!
Format: Kindle
Great for early language and sounds. As a mom and a special education teacher I love this book. Very sweet and enjoyable for a little one. But most importantly, written by a speech pathologist with all of the so important early sounds.

Great book for pre reading skills and communication, but poor quality, especially for price
Format: Board book, Format: Board book
My 2 year old grandson loves this book. He has memorized the words from each page and loves to point to different things on each page, when asked, and add his own commentary like “puppy is sleeping”. The only reason for minus 1 star is quality of book. Even though it’s a board book, the pages are peeling. Almost took 2 stars off, but it’s a really good book. However, I’m not sure what good it will be when the pictures peel off the page and we have no content to read. I would like seller to contact me re: book falling apart.
