Scouting for game or surveying property at night with a flashlight announces your presence to everything within a quarter mile. The Alpen Apex 384 35mm Thermal Monocular lets you detect heat signatures out to 1,300 meters in complete silence and total darkness — through fog, brush, and conditions where optical devices are blind. At 185mm long and under a pound, it pockets easily for the walk in and delivers ≤40mK thermal sensitivity through a 1024x768 OLED display with 8x digital zoom.

Key Features
  • 384x288 thermal sensor with 17µm pixel pitch — <40mK NETD sensitivity detects heat signatures out to 1,300 meters. The 35mm germanium objective lens provides a wide field of view at 2x base magnification, ideal for scanning broad areas
  • 1280x960 AMOLED display with six color palettes — High-resolution viewing with White Hot, Black Hot, Red Hot, Rainbow Hot, Red Monochrome, and Yellow Hot modes. The frost-resistant display maintains performance in sub-zero temperatures
  • 2x base magnification with 4x and 8x digital zoom — The low 2x starting magnification delivers the widest field of view in the Apex monocular line, making it the strongest choice for scanning and situational awareness. Zoom in to 8x when you need to identify targets at distance
  • Clear+ image processing in 8 levels — Alpen's Clear+ technology uses software algorithms to optimize image sharpness and detail reproduction. Adjustable across 8 intensity levels to match conditions
  • Picture-in-Picture and Hotspot tracking — PIP magnifies a portion of the view in a corner overlay without narrowing your overall field of view. Hotspot tracking marks the highest temperature in the scene in real time
  • 16GB internal memory with video recording — Capture photos and video, then review directly on the device or export via USB-C. Wi-Fi streaming lets you share your thermal view live on a phone or tablet via the Alpen Thermal companion app
  • Exchangeable APP-3500 battery system — Each battery delivers up to 6 hours of runtime. Two APP-3500 batteries are included for 12 hours total. Power-saving mode extends battery life during extended observation sessions. Charge via USB-C
  • IPX6 waterproof construction — Rated for heavy rain and splashing water with an operating temperature range of -25°C to +50°C (-13°F to +122°F)
  • Compact and tripod-mountable — At 185 x 53 x 80mm with a standard 1/4" tripod thread, the 35mm Apex is the most compact monocular in the Apex thermal line — small enough to carry in a jacket pocket, stable enough for hands-free observation on a tripod

Who It's For

Hunters who want a compact thermal for scouting and scanning. The wide 2x base magnification and 1,300-meter detection range let you sweep game fields, fence lines, and tree lines quickly in total darkness. The compact 185mm body fits in a cargo pocket or pack lid — ready when you need it.

Wildlife observers and property owners who want affordable thermal observation without bulk. The handheld form factor, tripod mount, and 12 hours of battery life make it suited to extended sessions — checking on livestock, monitoring wildlife corridors, or surveying property boundaries at night.

First-time thermal buyers looking for an entry point into quality thermal imaging. The 384x288 sensor with <40mK sensitivity and Clear+ processing delivers meaningful thermal performance at a lower price point than the 54mm model, while sharing the same sensor, display, and feature set.

would have been better as a blog
Format: Paperback
First off, I have read over half of this book, but ultimately decided to put it down because it had a low signal-to-noise ratio. If the second half is filled with magic, I apologize in advance. What I liked: * The author is very honest. He does not shy away from discussing his failures (and successes). * The postmortem on the game "Life of Pixel" was especially good. * Interviews from various indie studios are sprinkled throughout. What I did not like: * A number of pieces of information were already out-of-date. This makes me think that the concepts should have been discussed at a higher level. For example, specifics about game engine costs are discussed. These numbers have changed since E3 of this year. Definitely recheck any information before formulating a plan based on the book's recommendations. * The indie studio interviews are a wasted opportunity in that they each interview has the same set of questions. It's like a questionnaire was sent out via email and the responses were pasted into the book. * When discussing commercial options, such as engines or other software packages, blurbs once again appear to be cut-and-pasted (this time verbatim from the package's web site). * Some of the advice is too broad and too light. For example, when writing about how to create a press release, the author discuss how to write in the active voice. I'm frankly not looking for writing tips in my Indie Game Developer Handbook. * The book is filled with tons of web links. My paperback copy was not so useful here. I ultimately left the book with the impression that the information would have been much better in the form of a blog. The author could have really gone in depth with the parts of the book that shined while keeping the surveys of topics in a form that serves them better (i.e. web links on the web).

Helpful information and Questions to consider
Format: Paperback
As a writer of science fiction and fantasy I had already looked into the physical aspects of the worlds I was creating, but I quickly realized I needed to include society and culture in the worldbuilding. I started a search for information, questionairres, or guidelines to use and found very little that would be helpful to me as a writer. Until I came across this book. It's exactly what I needed. It touches on multiple aspects of beliefs and practices and asks questions to help you think through what you want for your worlds, even if it's mostly backgroud. A very useful tool.
